5 die in strong quake that jolted Philippines

by JOEL CALAMBA ESCOL, Managing Editor

MDNN NATIONAL NEWS (JULY 27, 2022) – At least five residents have died in a strong quake that jolted Northern Luzon, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported yesterday.

The local disaster preparedness in the hard-hit areas have not identified the fatalities yet but hinted that the 7.3 magnitude quake devastated buildings and infrastructures.

Renato Solidum, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was centered in Abra Province’s mountainous areas.

He said this is the biggest quake ever recorded in their office this year. Solidum has described the catastrophe as a major earthquake that terrified people.

Michael Brilliantes, a security guard, told the media that he was even shocked upon seeing buildings collapsed and some structures were really badly hit by the strong quake registering 7.0 at the Richter scale.

Brilliantes told Associated Press: “The ground shook like I was on a swing and the lights suddenly went out. We rushed out of the office, and I heard screams and some of my companions were in tears.”
