219 seized firearms burned in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A total of 219 assorted firearms seized in various operations were burned by the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM), according to reports reaching MDNN.

The firearms were all seized during operations in Central Mindanao, Tawi-tawi and Sulu.

Toribio Adaci Jr., NFWM commander in Western Mindanao told reporters Friday (May 7) that the assorted firearms were accumulated in their various campaigns against lawless elements operating in Central Mindanao, as well as against terrorism.

The destruction of short and long firearms was held at Tangan Gymnasium, according to the rear admiral, will be part of the upcoming 123rd Philippine Navy Anniversary on May 20, this year.

As part of the protocol in the destruction of seized firearms, the firearms were all cut into pieces  using a metal saw and then disposed to prevent recycle by unscrupulous individuals.

Lt General Corleto Vinluan Jr, Wesmincom commander and other top officials Westmincom, NFWM, and 4th and 2nd Marine Brigades were also present during the detruction ceremony

“We are putting beyond use these guns and other weapons of war that we have confiscated through the years of our operations here in southern Philippines with the fervent hope that with no or lesser firearms on the loose will mean a safer environment for all of us. The campaign against illegal firearms, weapons, and ammunition addresses the decades-long armed struggles in strife-torn areas in this part of our country as it seeks to deprive private armed and terrorist groups of the tools of war,” Vinluan added. – PNA
