2 killed, 3 wounded, one captured in Misor shootout

CAGAYAN de Oro City–Two were killed, including a police officer, one captured while three others were wounded in a shootout in Libertad, Misamis Oriental, 76 kilometers west of here, Monday evening.

Killed was P/Sgt. Ronald “Boboy” Caayupan, 41, Libertad, Misamis Oriental and one of the suspects identified as a certain Geopane Fabrigas Tinamisan.

Caayupan sustained a fatal gunshot wound on his neck while Tinamisan was killed when the police manning the checkpoint in Libertad returned fire.

Police also recovered five-sachet containing white substance believed to be “Shabu” (Methamphetamine Hydrochloride) in the body of Tinamisan.

Wounded were P/Sgt. Fernando Maestrado,  Gemma Patlunag, a civilian caught in the crossfire and one of the suspects identified as Richard Sonceres, 31, of Bangkal, Mahayahay, Lapu-Lapu City, recently residing in Barra, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

The wounded police officer and the civilian were in stable condition while Sonceres was admitted to a hospital for treatment and tactical investigation.

Pursuing law enforcers captured Sonceres under a bridge, a few meters from the police checkpoint. Sonceres, who tried to escape, broke leg when he jumped down the bridge with a dried-up creek.

Three other suspects, one is reportedly wounded, escaped. “They are now an object of police manhunt,” P/Capt. Ram Camelotes, commander of the Libertad municipal police station, said.

He said that the police are now in hot pursuit of the three remaining three suspects who could still be in the vicinity of the municipal town of Libertad.

In an interview with the media, Sonceres said that the group plans a robbery and on their way to Tubod, Iligan City, on board a white Mitsubishi, Mirage, when flogged down by the police checkpoint in Libertad, past 8 o.m. Monday.

He said that one of his three companions who escaped identified only as a certain “Junjun” has a gunshot wound on the back,

According to Sonceres, the five of them are staying in a rented house owned by a doctor in Barra, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

P/Col. Robert Roy Bahian, police provincial director of Misamis Oriental, said that the police have recovered four .45 caliber pistols, two .9mm pistols, four fragmentation grenades and other personal belongings in the suspect’s vehicle.

He said that the police were earlier alerted of a white vehicle with heavily armed men on board on their way to Iligan City Monday evening.

Bahian said that the police are trying to confirm on the involvement of the group in gunrunning, drug trafficking, and gun-for-hire activities.

“We are trying to determine the extent of the group’s involvement on various criminal activities in Mindanao and elsewhere,” Bahian said.
