2 dead bodies found in Catmon tragedy, 1 still missing

CATMON, Northern Cebu – Rescuers yesterday found the two dead bodies out of three missing victims in a tragedy that struck at Tinubdan Falls, Barangay Tabili, in the town of Catmon, Northern Cebu, around 1:00 pm, Sunday afternoon.

Police authorities identified the fatalities as Kent Jude Monterola, 17 years old, and Princess Alastre, 7-year-old, and residents of Barangay Kalangahan, Tuburan town. Tuburan town is an adjacent town to Catmon.

Monterola’s body was found seven hours later near a spillway in Sitio Kansija, Barangay Flores also in Catmon town, 14 kilometers from the site of the tragedy, while the dead body of a 7-year-old Princess Alastra was found the following day in Sitio Kulo, barangay Duyan, 22 hours after she was swept away by the gush of water, along with her mom, Jacel Alastra, 32. Jacel was still missing since Sunday, the report said.

On actual video footage by a drone cam, which became viral on social media sites, the 7-year-old girl was turned over by a lady to her mom, and then she scampered for her own safety. In a few seconds, the mother, Jacel, and her daughter were swept away by rampaging waters.

Also on the actual video, it was Kent Jude Monterola who had already managed to escape from harm after he and his other companion runaways from the center of the floodwaters. Unfortunately for Kent, he stopped, went back, and stayed for still unknown reasons, until he was cornered by the raging body of floodwaters that already carried mud and fallen trees.

Police investigation disclosed that the Alastra’s (Jacel and her daughter) from the adjacent barangay of Tuburan, were with 15 other family members and their relatives, who went on an outing and swimming at the famous Tinubdan Falls in Catmon on Sunday when the tragedy came.

Barangay Tabili, where the famous spot Tinubdan Falls was located, was only 15 kilometers away from the town center, the MDNN research department learned.

The locals in the area, the report said, had already warned them of the possible flash floods but they continue their outing plan

“It was only drizzling in our area but it appears to be raining at the origin of the waterfalls. When it happened, we heard someone warn us of flooding. We noticed that the water in the area turned brown and two minutes later, it started to rain in our area. We did not anticipate the flooding coming because it was only drizzling then,” one of their companions Dolendo said in vernacular. ##
