2 cadavers, one of a top commie, found in Surigao’s ‘battle ground’

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur–Two bodies, one a top communist officer, were recovered in the ‘battle ground’ between the military and rebel forces in the hinterlands of Diatagon, Surigao Del Sur, the military reported Sunday.

Capt. Aldim T.Viernes, the spokesperson of the army’s 401st Brigade based in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, identified one of the bodies as that of Marcelino Navarro, a.k.a. “Marsing,” head of the propaganda committee of the New People’s Army – North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NPA-NEMRC).

Viernes said that the identity of the other body remains unknown. The operating military team, however, buried the decomposing bodies after conducting proper documentation, he said.

According to Viernes, the military found the bodies during a weeklong pursuit operation in the area since the intermittent clashes between the military and the NPA rebels took place in the hinterlands of Diatagon in July 7.

Viernes said that aside from recovering two AK-47 rifles believed owned by the slain rebels, the military also recovered ammunitions, anti-personnel mines, bomb-making materials, one portable generator, assorted medical supplies, laptops, cell phones, and handheld radios.

He said that the military conducted hot pursuit operations in the area after the military tagged the NPA-NEMRC responsible in the killing of four innocent tribal members in Surigao provinces since July 6 resulting in a series of armed clashes in the hinterland villages.

Viernes said that the fourth and the latest tribal leader believed killed by the communist rebels was identified as Noel Estampa, 49, of Sitio Tabasngan, Mat-I, Surigao City who shot on July 11, 2020.
