ILIGAN CITY - Alfred Paolin could only watch as his house crumbled during the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that devastated the entire Cotabato province.
Now left without a home, Alfred his wife Analyn and daughter Annielyn live in a makeshift tent and in constant fear as the ground beneath them continues to shake from strong aftershocks that could last for weeks to come.
Alfred is one of the thousands of Cotabato residents who have been left homeless by the recent catastrophe that hit the island of Mindanao.
Heeding the cry for help from the earthquake victims, members of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, Inc. (PICE) - Iligan City - Lanao del Norte Chapter traveled to Makilala, North Cotabato, November 6 to bring relief goods to the calamity victims.
More than 170 families of Barangay New Cebu, Makilala were given relief packs to help displaced residents cope with the tragedy. Each relief pack contains 3 kilos of rice, 9 packs of noodles, 12 pieces of canned goods, 3 detergent bars and a laminated sack.
Leading the group was PICE Chapter President Gerry Baldomero who was moved by the plight of the earthquake victims upon seeing the horrific news footages aired over the local TV stations.
“This has become a tradition of our Chapter, to help those in crisis and respond to the needs of our countrymen suffering from disasters like the recent earthquake here in Cotabato," Baldomero said.
Among those who personally distributed the relief packs were DPWH Misamis Oriental 1 District Engineer and Chapter Past President Marivel Frances L. Ong, Past President Edgardo Ong, Immediate Past President Janet Domato, Marivic Principe, and incoming Board of Director Anne Marie Dizon.
“We simply cannot ignore the appeal for help by our countrymen, we have to do something to help them get their life back," said DPWH-Lanao del Norte 2nd District Engineer and Board of Director Alykan Ali.
The PICE contingent had to endure an 8-hour road trip from Iligan City to reach the interior town of Makilala, North Cotabato and deliver their much-needed assistance to the earthquake victims. (DPWH10)
