Dubbed as Student Learning Assessment for Bangsamoro (SLAB), the baseline study aims to gather baseline data on literacy, numeracy, social and emotional skills, executive function, and the attitudes and motivation of K-3 learners.
“The SLAB initiative is part of our efforts to integrate evidence-based approach to planning and programming,” said BARMM Education Minister Mohagher Iqbal. Iqbal said early years education, which include K-3, is given special attention by the ministry because these are the foundational years of a child.
“Early years education is where we can provide the building blocks of life-long learning, prosperity, and values for our children,” said Iqbal.
He added K-3 interventions are a strong predictor of school success and later on, success in adult life.
Iqbal shared that in the BARMM, high dropout rates are seen in early years education.
“The baseline study is hoped to find out why this is happening and what needs to be done to keep our children in schools,” he said.
The ministry created a technical working group to oversee the baseline study, which is supported by the Australian Government through the Pathways Program.
Iqbal said the study’s survey instrument is being finalized and shall be subjected to a field trial before upscaling it throughout BARMM next year.
Results of the baseline study are hoped to inform BARMM’s plans, programs, and education policies especially in the areas of early years education in the near future.
