Local cement prices expected to go down as SMC buys majority stake in Holcim

May 22, 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MDN digital, May 22) - The prices in locally-produced cement is expected to lower down as San Miguel Corporation buys the majority shares of Holcim Philippines, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported.  DTI secretary Ramon M. Lopez told reporters during a press conference “We can expect more synergies in their operations, more economies of scale which will hopefully bring down their cost, prices. But we still expect some segmentation of the market because we all know that the Eagle brand is always lower than Holcim. Just like in any industry, different brands still come up with different prices.”  Based on reports, San Miguel Corporation, through its own subsidiary company First Stronghold Cement Industries, Inc., will acquire more than 85 percent stake in local counterpart of Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim Ltd.   Meanwhile, Ramon S. Ang, who is earlier reported to have full control of San Miguel is also the owner of Eagle Cement. The move of this giant company in the Philippines is seen by many as the tycoon's expansionary move especially into the cement business purposely to gain a big share into the cement business in the Philippines, amid the government's massive push for infrastructure and other business ventures. But reports also said that the $2.15 Billion deal between two giant firms will still fall as notifiable transaction based on the Philippine Competition Act (PCA), as it has yet to secure the signal of the anti-trust body. Both parties were given 30 days reportedly after the definitive agreement has been officially signed.
