Hongkong's people power vs China's new extradition law heats up

June 9, 2019

HONGKONG (MDN World digital, June 9) Over 700,000 people trooped to the streets Sunday in Hongkong to protest the amendments of the extradition law allowing suspects to be brought to China to face trial. Observers consider this the biggest march rally in 15 years in Hongkong. The police have warned the public not to join the rally, according to a government-funded RTHK radio. Police have also mobilized over 2,000 police officers. The march rally was participated in by over 700,000 people from all walks of life but mostly adults according to protest organizers. The rally started at Victoria Park with protesters chanting "no China extradition, no evil law." Later the crowd was estimated to have reached over five hundred thousands as the protesters also occupied underground rail stations. The protesters have also called on Hongkong chief executive Carrie Lam to step down. The people who march in the streets and opposed the amendment to the extradition bill were composed of community residents, business people, lawyers, students and pro-democracy figures in Hongkong, it was learned.  In 2003, over 500,000 people also marched the main streets and protested government plans for tighter national security laws. The protest seemed very successful as the China government softened its rule for the residents of Hongkong and shelved the tighter security laws.### ---       ABOUT JOEL Joel Calamba Escol is a journalist since 1991, author and all around person. Cardema is overage to represent Duterte Youth partylist, says Comelec's Guanzon

June 7, 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MDN National News digital) - Even as Ronald Cardema's substitution is approved but still his overage disqualification issue lingers and poses a threat in his bid to represent Duterte Youth. Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon is strongly opposing Cardema to sit in the 18th Congress until his DQ issue is resolved as it will only add mockery to the Comelec body if he be allowed to represent D Youth. Cardema is already 34 years old. The reason that certain groups have opposed his bid to represent the group youth group, saying that Cardema violated the Partylist System Act by not meeting the age qualification. The Party-List System Act has clearly mandated that youth representative/s must be at least 25 years old, but not more than 30 years old on Election Day. 'Walang uupo na rep ang D Youth (Duterte Youth) until the DQ (disqualification) versus Cardema is resolved,' was the strong message of the Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon when she was texted by a Rappler reporter. On June 4, the poll body's en bank has approved the last-minute withdrawals. It also approved the group's petition for substitution in which was filed by Cardema, chair of the D Youth. But there were already 10 oppositions (from watchdogs, youth groups and some lawyers) received by the Comelec before it approved Cardema's substitution bid Before the poll body accepted Cardema's substitution bid, more than 10 oppositions from election lawyers, watchdogs, and youth groups were filed before Comelec. The Comelec's Commissioner dissented from poll body's approval of the substitution of Cardema purposely "to give due course to the nomination" of Cardema as well as 5 others as substitute nominees of said partylist group D Youth. Guanzon said she dissented because she cannot allow what he termed as unabashed mockery and assault to the democratic process. One Comelec Commissioner Luie Guia has also abstained from the poll body's decision (5-1-1 in favor of Cardema) approving Cardema's substitution bid to represent D Youth. He said he wants to be consistent with his earlier vote denying the accreditation of D Youth.  Guia said that in the first place the Duterte Youth partylist group should not have been approved and accredited by the commission.###   ---  ABOUT JOEL Joel Calamba Escol is a journalist since 1991, author and all around person. The PNP did not elaborate what firearms Erwin Tulfo must surrender after it reportedly expired in May this year. But the order came just after Tulfo was also directed to stop using police escorts as policemen assigned to him were already recalled. Erwin Tulfo reportedly receive these directives barely three weeks after his attacks on former Army chief and now secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Rolando Bautista. Earlier, PNP chief Oscar Albayalde revealed that the recent recall of Tulfo's police security was partly because of his rants and attacks on DSWD chair Rolando Bautista. EXPIRED FIREARMS Meanwhile, PNP spokesperson Col Bernard Banac claimed Tulfo's license to own and possess firearms (LTOPF) was already expired. Banac told reporters during a press conference that "the PNP has ordered for the recall or temporary custody or safekeeping of the firearms of Erwin Tulfo in as much as the license to own and possess firearms of Mr Erwin Tulfo has already expired.”  READ: Erwin Tulfo apologizes to DSWD Sec Bautista, family Since his (Erwin Tulfo) LTOPF has already expired, he is no longer authorized to carry firearms. This, even if its license are still okay, the PNP spokesperson said. Banac said a notice was already sent to Mr Tulfo last Thursday (June 6) to surrender his firearms, and it has "open deadline." OPTION TO RETURN OR NOT Since Erwin Tulfo has already went to the Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO) and expressed his plan to renew his LTOPF, he has the option to retun the firearms or not, Banac said. Banac, however clarified: "He has to show that he’s working out the requirements to complete the application process.
