Misor solon hails DOTr's brilliant move to decongest trains during rush hours

June 29, 2019

MISAMIS ORIENTAL (MDN Mindanao News, June 29) - A lady lawmaker and pride of Mindanao, Representative Juliette Uy of the 2nd District of Misamis Oriental, hailed the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) "libreng sakay" for students on train lines, such as the Philippine National Railway (PNR), Metro Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit.  The Misamis Oriental lawmaker said the new fare exemption for students implemented by DOTr was considered as "a brilliant move to decongest the trains and light rails especially during "rush hours." “Decongestion of the trains can also lead to lighter train loads and fewer line disruptions,” cited Uy, who was also congratulated by his peers and associates because of her stand on "international garbage." It was learned that this new scheme implemented by DOTr can be availed by students from Mondays thru Fridays, and from morning and afternoon free ride schedules. Rep Uy was a member of the House Transportation Committeee during the 17th Congress, noted that the time slots that are free for students were only before the morning and afternoon peak hours.     Uy said the terminal fee exemption would help encourage more students travelling as domestic tourists. She said “Many backpacker tourists are students. I hope the airlines and shipping companies will see the DoTr move as a signal for them to develop the backpacker tourist segment dominated by students,” said Uy, who also served as member of the Tourism committee. Free rides schedules: Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT 2): 4:30 am to 6:00 am; 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm Philippine National Railways (PNR): 5:00 am to 6:00 am; 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3): 5:00 am to 6:30 am; 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm    FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES IN MINDANAO AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY, PLEASE VISIT OUR SISTER PUBLICATIONS BUSINESS WEEK MINDANAO and MINDANAO TIMES ---    ABOUTJOEL Joel Calamba Escol is a writer since 1991, author and all around person. Duterte threatens to "jail" impeachment proponents

June 29, 2019

METRO MANILA (MDN National News digital, June 29) - President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday threatened to put to jail all the opposition leaders and lawmakers who are planning to file an impeachment complaint against him due to his reported failure to protect the country's territory. One of those who recently filed impeachment against President Duterte was Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano. Other lawmakers who also hatch the idea of possibly filing impeachment cases were former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio. Duterte told reporters in Malacañang on Thursday "I-impeach ako? Kulungin ko silang lahat. Subukin niyo. Try to take it, do it, and I will do it." Del Rosario said Duterte's decision to allow Chinese fishermen to fish at the disputed Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) is ground for an impeachable offense that the President may just took for granted. Del Rosario said the EEZ is part of the territory that should be protected by the president based on the Philippine Constitution. He was pointing to Article XII section 2 of the Phil Constitution which states that the government "shall protect the nation's marine wealth in its archipelagic waters, and exclusive economic zone, and preserve its use and enjoyment exclusively to Filipino citizens."   Earlier, the president said China can fish along the EEZ in West Philippine Sea because of the two nation's "friendship." “I don’t think China would do that (to stop fishing in Philippine territory). Why? Because we’re friends,” the president told reporters in Malacañang. Presidential spokesperson Panelo said that the President’s move is not a ground for impeachment. “Under the Constitution, merong provisions ang impeachment. Kung naniniwala sila na may ginawa syang impeachable ground, eh di mag-file… Ano ba ang nakalagay diyan sa culpable violation of Constitution? Like what? Bribery, wala. Graft and corruption, high crimes, ano ang ginawa niya?” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador explained.  “You scare me with impeachment, son of a bitch just try doing it. Erap said you will end up losing to me. Just try me, try me. If you are a man and you are brave and have balls, do it, son of a bitch,” the seemingly irate Pres. Duterte said. Duterte named his detractors:  “These fools, they are bright but they are not smart.” “We do not need to give or disallow China because in the mind of China and everybody else, down to the last soldier and citizen, it is theirs. If I tell China, ‘Don’t do that.’ If I tell them not to do that, not to do this, they will do it. And you are there for an embarrassment. That is what these fools want." ###     FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES IN MINDANAO AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY, PLEASE VISIT OUR SISTER PUBLICATIONS BUSINESS WEEK MINDANAO and MINDANAO TIMES

Arrest warrants out for 3 Sokors on ‘trash’ mess

June 28, 2019

TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental--The Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Misamis Oriental has issued arrest warrants to three South Korean nationals suspected of importing 6,000 metric tons of garbage in July 2018. Customs collector John Simon, of the sub-port of the Mindanao International Container Terminal (MICT), identified the South Korean national as Jae Ryang Cho, Sena Na, and Chul Soo Cho a.k.a Charles Cho. Simon said that the Bureau of Customs filed the charges against the three South Koreans for violation of various environmental laws under Republic Act 6969 in connection with the smuggling of 6,500 metric tons of garbage from July 2018 to October 2018. According to Simon, the Bureau of Customs has also included Filipinos serving as officials of the Verde Soco, the South Korean-owned “plastic” factory in the industrial site in Tagolo-an, Misamis Oriental. Following the issuance of the arrest warrants, Simon issued a public appeal for the immediate arrest of the three South Korean nationals. He said that a “hold departure” order must be issued against the three South Koreans to prevent them from leaving the country. “The South Koreans must be held responsible for bringing tons of garbage disguised as “recyclable materials” for the proposed “plastic” recycling firm in the industrial zone in the village of Sta. Cruz in Tagoloan,” Simon said. He said that aside from penalizing the South Koreans for the illegal shipment of garbage, they must also pay for the damaged done. The issue of the garbage dumping in Misamis Oriental was exposed by the Manila Times in July 2018 when residents in the coastal areas reported about the presence of suspicious cargoes unloaded out of the foreign vessel that docked at the MICT port early in July 2018. An inter-agency task force on the environment, local government units, media, and the law enforcers later found out that the cargoes delivered in the stockyard of Verde Soko, the plastic manufacturing firm, which imported the items from South Korea, turned out to be garbage pile. Simon said that the garbage at the stockyard of Verde Soko would also be brought back to its point of origin after environmental officials in South Korea visited the area two weeks ago. He said that the 6,500 metric tons garbage, which arrived at the MICT port in October 2018 was already shipped back to South Korea early January 2019. Two more cases of alleged attempts to unload “imported garbage” in the port of MICT in Tagolo-an, Misamis Oriental were monitored since the media exposed the Verde Soko garbage issue here. During the latter part of January 2019, the Bureau of Customs was able to intercept and send back a shipment of garbage from Hongkong about to be unloaded in the MICT port. Simon said that the Bureau of Customs was also able to check the waste materials from a municipal town of Australia, which was consigned to a cement factory in Misamis Oriental. He said that the waste from Australia known as Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF) is withheld at the MICT port pending results of the investigation by Customs officials.
