Red Cross-Lanao raises P1.2m fund

ILIGAN City--The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) – Lanao del Norte Chapter raised more than P1.2 million from the Million Volunteer Run fund raising simultaneously conducted early morning on Sunday (December 8) around the country.

In Lanao del Norte, the start and finish line was inside the Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) in Tubod town.

Greg Galucan, officer-in-charge of PRC Lanao, said the amount raised during the event is big help to the delivery of basic services of the organization such as the blood, health and safety program and activities and the training of the youth volunteers.

“This is very useful especially if there are calamities... in our disaster management service. We are experiencing now a lot of floods, earthquakes... the funds we raised will be used there,” Galucan said.

In Lanao del Norte, there are 8,000 volunteers based in barangay with 44 members of the emergency response unit in each barangay according to Galucan.

They are composed of residents from different ages “who has the heart to serve the people in their barangay.

“Kung dunay mga kalamidad sila ang mata, sila ang mata, ang kamot, ang tiil ang dalunggan sa Red Cross aron makahatag ta og serbisyo ngadto sa mga biktima. Trained sila sa first aid, sa disaster management ug uban pa nga mga trainings,” Galucan added.

Around 2,000 volunteers participated in the fun run that has 3K (3 kilometer) and 5K categories, that was composed mostly of youth, employees and officials of the provincial government of Lanao del Norte, municipal officials and personnel of the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Dimaporo said the activity did not only benefits those who need the services of the PRC but also benefits the participants to healthy lifestyle.

Winners

Best buddies and relatives from Munai town won the first and the second places in the 3K Male Categories.

Sweating and panting, Arafah Jabbar and Abdul Jabbar Sultan arrived together in the finish line, holding hands together without thinking that they are in a competition. They stopped running few feet from the finish line.

Jabbar finished the run at 12 minutes and 22 seconds, a second ahead of Sultan at 12:23.

The two are coming from Munai town. Jabbar is a Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman of Barangay Poblacion.

It was their first time to join a fun run because they are into basketball.

“Sinabi lang sa amin ng mayor naming na sasali kami sa fun run. Di pa kami nakasali dati ng marathon. Di naming alam na contest ito,” Jabbar said

(Our municipal mayor told us to join the fun run. We never ever joined marathon before, we did not know this is a competition.)

In the 3K female category, the 24-year old Jane Tagoldol from Tubod town, Lanao del Norte, won with 15:50.

Tagoldol said he is not really into marathon competition but for only exercise to have a healthy body.

“I run for health reason,” Tagoldol said.

In the 5K male category, Jowil Sambalod won, finishing the race at 15:33.

Meanwhile, Mary Grace Asahid of Barangay Maranding, Lala, won as first for the 5K female category finishing at 24 minutes and 28 seconds.

Asahid is a triathlete who just joined the last two triathlon events in Lanao del Norte called Lanorteman. The first was in September, which was held in Kauswagan town, while the second event was in the first week of December in Sultan Naga Dimaporo.

Looking forward

Gov. Dimaporo is looking forward of hosting again the same event of the PRC in the future and hoping the number of participants will increase.

“Hopefully next year the number will be doubled. This year, we ran out of time for our dissemination of information that’s why we only had this number now. But it (number of participants) is still very overwhelming,” Dimaporo said.
