Cagayan de Oro Mayor Moreno to celebrate fiesta with caution amid coronavirus threat

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno vowed to celebrate fiesta in August with caution and protocols in place amid the continuing threat of the coronavirus disease.

In a press briefing Thursday (July 30), the city mayor announced to the media that they are now listing various activities lined up including the traditional beauty pageant. But they are also studying more options how to celebrate the city's fiesta with enough caution to combat the continuing threats of the pandemic.

The coronavirus positive cases in Cagayan de Oro is still soaring, now with over 150 cases, especially with the influx of Locally-stranded individuals (LSIs) and Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROFs).

Moreno said: ‘I was reminded of the July 26 bombing in 2013 during my first three year term and I remembered being asked if the city fiesta will continue. Even with Davao City back then declaring a downscaled celebration of its fiesta, I replied that the city fiesta will go on. This year it will continue but we won’t forget our enforcement and observance of minimum health standards.’ 

INITIAL ACTIVITIES

Initially, some committees and activties were identified. This include the regular Higalaay Festival, which will be launched on August 3. While other activities, including the beauty pageant, are still being ironed out, in lined with the present rulings made by Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF)

But Mayor Moreno hinted out that among the highlights in this year's fiesta celebration will be the installation of incoming Archbishop Jose Cabantan, who is scheduled to replace outgoing and longtime cit archbishop Antonio Ledesma on August 28. 

During the press briefing, it was also announced that the staging of the Miss Cagayan de Oro beauty pageant which is only virtual. 

‘I would like to thank Mags Cue and City Hall officials for pushing through with the event (even with the health safety protocols required),’ Moreno added.

Moreno also thanked Eileen San Juan for helping spearhead the preparations for the annual fiesta. "The collective efforts of everyone concerned (to push through with the fiesta) is both heartwarming and uplifting (amid the pandemic)."
