TOKYO, JAPAN (World News digital, July 20) - An angry man shouting "You die!" barged into an animation studio and set the building on fire using a flammable liquid, killing 33 people and injuring 36 others in Kyoto, a very rare type of an attack that shocked the whole country.
The police reported that majority of those injured were in critical condition as they were burned when they scampered toward the roof in a desperate escape attempt to save their lives. This incident was considered in Japan history as the deadliest fire that hit the country in nearly two decades.
Some of those who have successfully escaped and cheated death were blackened, bleeding and barefoot.
Of the 33 bodies, 20 of them were located at the third floor while some were on the stairs when fire caught them up, causing their untimely demise.
Kazuhiro Hayashi, Kyoto fire official said two more of the victims were found at the first floor while 11 others were at the second floor.
The police investigators only identified the suspect as a 41-year-old man. He was not a worker of the anime studio and he was also injured one of those taken at the nearest hospital.
A witness of the fire incident told a Japanese TV that the suspect angrily shouted "You die!" and complained that something was taken from him. It was not clear, however, what the man was talking about. The police probers claimed something from him must have been taken by the company.
Police investigators said majority of the victims were workers and rank and file employees of Kyoto Animation. All of them work for the movie industry and TV productions but one of their mega hit creations include stories featuring high school girls. It became a hit that fans even made visitations and pilgrimages of the places depicted on their movies.
Investigation disclosed that the fire started first at the third floor in Kyoto, considered as the country's ancient capital. The attacker reportedly sprayed a liquid accelerant but the brand is still unidentified at press time.
“There was an explosion, then I heard people shouting, some asking for help.” Black smoke was rising from windows on upper floors. Ten there was a man struggling to crawl out of the window,” a witness told TBS TV.
Investigation also said the fire must have started at the front door, promptng the residents to look for fire exits and other way out to escape from the deadly conflagration. ###
