THE Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro-Peacebuilding with VOICE Mindanao and its partner Volunteer Organizations and Volunteer Service Programs hosted the 1st Northern Mindanao Volunteers Summit last August 8th to promote and recognize Volunteer Efforts contributing to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals implemented in the country.
“Volunteering has been an integral part of the lives of people and communities all over the world especially the vulnerable communities who benefit from the valuable assistance of volunteers – individuals and organizations of good will, who share their knowledge, skills, time and resources to bring social services, technical assistance and humanitarian support to communities in need mostly those in the peripheries,” noted Myrna Aboniawan-Siose , VOICE VP for Mindanao and Coordinator, ACDO-Peacebuilding.
During the summit held at the Activity Center of Limketkai Mall in Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, , VOICE partners conduct a whole fair of ideas promoting Volunteerism, Volunteer Service and its important role in responding to prevalent issues of conflict, human rights violation, hunger and under-development.
With the theme” Volunteers Bridging Peace, Promoting Human Rights and Shared Humanity in Mindanao”, the summit sought to raise public awareness and appreciation of volunteerism demonstrated in the Filipino traditions of “bayanihan”, “pagdadamayan”, “offering a hand for a cause” and to recognize volunteer efforts and service as meaningful expression of responsible citizenship, conflict-sensitive development in the countryside and affirmative action for greater good of humanity.
The event was divided into 3 parts: Part 1 – Exhibits-Gallery of the participating volunteer orgs, booth for Free Services (Consultation and Counseling: Legal, Psycho-Social, HIV, VAWC.) and Display of products for sale from volunteer-communities.
Part II – Conversations-TALK SHOW on 1. Organization’s Volunteer Prog. Best Practice, Volunteer’s Most Significant Change - Impact on Volunteer Partner Communities/Org and Rewards in Volunteering
Part III –Recognition and Commissioning of Volunteer Managers of Comm. Based Recovery Program.
“Learning from each other’s best practices and lessons, we hope will strengthen more people’s sense of volunteer citizenship and social responsibility to take part in building a just and peaceful society,” Siose said.
“It is also our intention that more young people will become part of a growing network of volunteer-peace builders, human rights defenders and healers in Northern Mindanao.
